With the game still scoreless with under four minutes to go, Capitals goalie Braden Holtby went to play a puck. He took a bit too much time, though, and when he went to clear, Taylor Pyatt knocked the puck down. With Holtby out of the net, Carl Hagelin fired a shot that was blocked by a Capitals defender, but Brad Richards buried the puck into the empty net to give the Rangers the 1-0 lead.
