An Amazing Run

Though the Rangers season came to a painful and abrupt end Friday night, it needs to be noted just what an amazing ride 2011-12 was for the Blueshirts. Where does this memorable season rank among your most favorite Ranger seasons?

Being 53 years young, and with original 6 blood in me,this season rates as the 4th best in 45 years of watching hockey. The winning the Cup in 1994 was #1 of course! The 1974 playoff win against Montreal,by the GAG Line,Brad Park, and my hero Eddie GIACOMMIN was #2!The #3 was watching the Rangers beat Philly when the BEEZER was amazing! We may have had 2 more Cups if not for the greatest player ever (Bobby Orr)!The#4 was this year because not everyone knew what we had,and we surprized teams. Now the challenge is out there and as coach says every year you must make changes or you become complacent and you start a down trend. Improve via trades, draft(CDA),(USA)resign your own players!

I honestly...have no words. I feel 100% shocked and saddened by our loss. The fact that there was no Game 7 last night completely broke my heart. When that puck went in a little over a minute in.....I collapsed on the floor. If there is one thing to say about ALL NYR fans, its our passion and love for this team. There are no other fans that really feel what we feel, we love this team as if they were our best best friends, our family, and in many ways they really are. I can honestly say this team has given me so much these past few years and it has been more than a pleasure watching them play and it is so sad to have to wait until October once again to see them hit the ice. But at the end of the day, it isn't our broken hearts that matter right now...its our continued support for the team who gave us hope when we were down 2-0, when we scored 2 goals in a 1:57, when we shut teams out, when we came out 1st in the Eastern Conference when people thought we were never even going to make the playoffs. If there is anything to take from this season it is thank you NYR for being what you are, for playing hard FOR US, for leaving it all out there on the ice when it mattered and even when it didn't, thank you NYR for playing...thank you for an amazing season...

Woke up this morning and immediately started hyperventilating. Why? no Game 7 no more Rangers Hockey this season. Wow still hurts...moping around the house, feel like my best friend died. Just really got emotionally invested in this team. Ex: hubby got me upset this morning (wrong move) I grabbed him by his carotid artery and squeezed (he started choking) yeah he got the message. Don't mess with a Rangers Fan. Must say that Rangers did have an Amazing Run this season. It was special, only 4 months away to the start of next season. Us fans have a lot to look forward too. Our young players gained some playoff experience that should mature them both mentally and emotionally. Rangers gave us an exciting season. The 24/7 mini-series was truly sensational, we got to spend time really getting to know the team. Their phenomenal win at the Winter Classic against Philly will stay with me forever. As well as the entire season leading up to Friday nights game. I think I'm hurting so much because of how we loss Friday night. Also having to witness the look of "agony and defeat" reflected on Hank's face as well as our boys skating off the ice with their heads down. Brutal thing to see. Then to listen to the questions asked by the reporters "how does it feel to lose" Can you describe "heartbreak" (uhhh duh). Blueshirts will come back next season on fire...

My Hopes for this offseason- Out- Dubinsky, Zucs, Rupp, Bickel, Scott, Mitchell. Possibly- Biron. In- P.A. Paranteau 67 points, would be 2nd on our roster, with a bad Islanders team. Gaustad C, Konopka C. Huselis or Penner at LW. Gives us 3 scoring lines, and a strong 4th line. Fits with 21 cap space if you lose the above mentioned, and resign Prust, MDZ, Stralhman, Eminger for an 8th Def. Upgrade from Biron to Vokoun or Nittymaki. 21 cap space with those you got rid of, and plenty to resign and get those 4 FA, you add 30-40 goals. Have four solid lines, not a bunch of centers playing LW and RW except on one line. Hagelin- Richards- Gaborik Kreider- Stepan- Cally Penner/Huselis- Gastaud- PA Paranteau Anisimov/Boyle- Konopka- Prust. Feds We don't need Parise if we fill up a bunch of holes.

More like 25-30 goals, minus the ones we lose with Dubi 10, Rupps 1, Zucs 2.

adding Gaustad would be tremendous. I think you are going to see Dubinsky and MDZ go to Columbus for Nash if there is cap room OR Parise as a UFA....I think we saw that 3rd and 4th lines can win playoff games when your top line gets shut down... I am a big PA fan, I don't get why they didn't keep him in the first place..... I was happy with Biron

Mr.S.Nola your off season wishes are right on the money! Dubie shows up out of shape and has a terrible season,no excuse! These guys like Rupp,Doyle,Fedetenko,Bickel, and S.Mitchell are way too slow. It would be great if we got Parenteau back, but I'd say Torts doesn't like him because of his defense in his end.In-Biron.P.Gaustad and Konopka, are very good faceoffmen.Players of interest are resigning Prust,MDZ,and Dman Stralman.Upgrade with Harding or Nittymaki or keep Biron.Vokoun is an injury waiting to happen. The scorers are NASH,SEMIN,SUTER,PARISE,BOYES,DOAN,HUDLER,JAGR,JANSSEN,M.CARLE.You may get one or 2 of these players with the above ones.We would assign or buy out the floater Stepan,Anisimov,Doyle,as every year brings change or you become compliscent!

Confession: I have gone through a transformation this year. From being a non hockey person, to becoming a true blue NYR fan. I almost feel embarrassed to admit that, but I have cheered so hard and watched every game this season, I feel I can call myself a true fan. My family is steeped in NYR tradition. (I don't know why I didn't catch on sooner :( )My Dad being one of the biggest fans. I can safely admit that we both cried at this season ending loss. You see I had an another motive for starting to watch NYR hockey. My Dad had a stroke and he has lost the ability to talk for the most part. We have totally bonded in a way I can't really even describe and in part it's been because we can still 'talk' about the latest hockey game. We have had so many great moments watching the Rangers this year. I call him screaming with joy and we shout together Let's Go Rangers!! So I'll wrap up by saying THANK YOU RANGERS for a great season and so many great moments. I really wish they would have kicked the sh** out of the Devils, but I know there will also be A LOT to look forward to next year and my Dad and I will be watching!!

When the Devils win the cup they should get the Canyon Of Hero's like the New Jersey Giants. The Knick fans who are the kings of Msg and corporations on wall street will come out by the millions for the parade because they don't know the difference. Better get some more Edmonton Oilers and some bigger pads for Flukeqvist, five goalies in front of him was not enough as he gagged again and was outclassed by another Cap rookie and Anderson. Next year it will be Tavares in Lower Manhattan with the Stanley Cup back home in New York Islander hands where it always belongs. So when does Rick Nash sign with the Knicks.

The 2011-12 Rangers season was anything but a failure. A definite disappointment on how it endend in OT vs NJ on Friday night, but this is not the first time that the best team has not emerged out of the conference final to play for the Cup. Devils proved to be more lucky than good and only time will tell if they have it in them to beat the Kings, the NHL's hottest team in the Playoffs. The Rangers have all the pieces to the puzzle and now just have to put them together to win the Stanley Cup in 2013. Henrik and the defense were the major reason for the success, clutch goals throughout the season and especially in the Playoffs (Game 3 Triple OT Gaborik goal, Game 5 Richards goal with 6.6 seconds and Staal's game winner in OT), the come from behind against a strong Senators team in the opening round, will be the keys to build on. So what is needed: (1) more scoring, no doubt about it and (2) capitalizing on the power play with good puck control. John Tortorella is the man for the job and he said it best today, "the Rangers have to turn it up and realize that there is a lot of hockey to play after the second round. This team is young, exciting, and will win. Congrats to the NY Rangers organization for a great year, but we all realize, that there is more to get done and it starts in September. The CUP comes to New York next spring!!

Our Rangers are very young. They are only going to get better. It's not their time yet. They are climbing the ladder. This hard-fought 20 game playoff was invaluable experience. Thanks for a hard-fought run! Now, I want to discuss that mad scramble. Most every Ranger did his job as the puck kept finding a Devil. Lundqvist was remarkable as he made 3 point blank saves. Can someone tell me what Girardi was thinking? He did absolutely nothing. He left Henrique alone in the crease (absurd), skated AROUND THE NET, and had a chance to redeem himself by bodying the Devil who stuffed it between Lundqvists pads. He merely attempted to lift his stick and missed. I've watched it over and over. Girardi's not being talked about. Hey, I love the guy, but he clearly is the goat on that OT goal, which cost us a chance to win a game that we had the upper hand...

I'm so sad to see the season end like it did, but we couldn't win with no offence being generated. We relied too much on Henrik, and the defense and they can't prevent everything. We needed a consistent scorer which we didn't have. Callahan was our highest scorer with a total of 6 goals. We needed more than that, and we're not going to get any where with out offence. Especially when our D is ran into the ground. Ryan McDonagh was playing almost 60 minutes every game, imagine how tired he must have been, just like every other player on the team. We were worn out, and it was an amazing season, one the fans, and the players will never forget.

Dear Red, Completely disagree. I guess that you did not realize that in games 5 and 6 vs the Devils, the Rangers had dictated the play. Perhaps the biggest regret was not winning Game 2 in the Garden with a 2-1 lead in the second and NY lets a few "no names" especially Carter make them pay the price. Sad, too, that if the Rangers had won in OT on Friday night, I really think that history would have repeated itself with a Rangers Game 7 win AGAIN!..Give the Devils an ounce of credit: with an "at the end of his Hall of Fame career Brodeur" the Devils forechecking game spared the old man an embarrassment of trying to fend off 35+ shots per game. Let's see what Marty does against a 12-2 road team in the Kings starting on Wednesday night.

I totally agree regarding the length of the NHL playoff structure. I think four rounds of 7 games is just TOO LONG. The first two rounds need only be 3-out-of-5. Of course it's all about the $$ of selling more tickets, but in my opinion, the playoffs should be wrapped up by Memorial Day.

Tommy Tunes I literally know about 2 dozen families that claim they are devils fans and this is the deal with the Devils fan base ... a good percentage of these families the dads (35 years or older) admitted to me that they were never true fans of hockey and never paid attention to the sport until the devils came into existence. So because their kids started to like the devils when they started to win back in '95, they got into it for their children. So one consistent theme that Ranger fans can be proud of is that we are NOT fans because a new tri state area team that just started to win. What would these bandwagon fans do if there was no devils franchise? They could go with a team that had been there for awhile in the NHL?

Mike, there are 3 kinds of Devil "fans", let's use that word lightly...#1 Were Ranger fans and left because the Rangers weren't winning..#2 Became bandwagon fans in 1994-95 when Devils won first cup, remember they didn't sell out those cup finals...#3 Actual fans who started watching in late 80's and have stuck with them, there arn't many of these as you'll see at any regular season game when the Rangers or Flyers arn't the opponent...They should of stayed in Kansas City !

Hey True, i've lived in NJ my whole life, 44 yr old, Went to garden first time when I was 7 and it was game Eddie Giac came back after being traded which is a huge moment in NYR history...I've bled blue ever since, love this team ! The Devils came to NJ in 1983 and I could care less about them, for those fans who left us to root for them good ridance and the new bandwagon fans are even more irrelevant to me..

I agree. The Islanders were considered to be "chokers" for many years. Nobody remembers that now after 5 consecutive Finals appearances washed that memory away. The experience this young team got here is immeasurable...

NYR Chris 9985 - With all do respect buddy, you really cannot compare Kennan to Torts. Very different personalities for a very different group of players. They commanded (not demanded) respect from the players in their own way. Kennan was far from mild mannered. He just had a different way of showing it - which maybe seemed more in control than Torts - so looked more mild mannered. To put Kennan in the category of no pulse (if thats what you really meant) is way off dude .. he helped deliver our last cup .... remember? This current team is a younger version of '94 without the deeper lineup or scorers. The '94 team had a bunch of older more experienced warriors. Actually a bit to old - so no longer lasting team to keep dominating unfortunately. But this CURRENT team ... they WILL learn how to win better and grow together since they are younger. THATS what we really have to look forward to here. As Torts says, "we have something special here". The '94 team was built to win that year. We are now built to keep winning for at least 3-5 years to come and will learn from year to year and GROW. The younger guys like Kreider will make this a more balanced and greater team. We did lack the consistent depth needed to go to that next level - The Finals. So young but so close! We will deliver !!

Excellent point, Michael. This Rangers team is built to win often in the future and it starts in September. Agree too with another blogger that sometimes a devasting loss such as Friday serves a purpose down the road. Devils proved that in 1995 although with much less effort as it was a lock out season that started in late February and NJ actually won the fewest games in the history of the NHL to become a Cup winner. In finding the balance, the team should have learned this year that it is going to need some of those 5-0, 6-1, 4-1, 7-2 wins just to give the defense a break. Champions are built with great defense and sometimes the defense becomes the best offense, but I think the key to next season is developing a highly potent power play and find 2 additional players to join Gaborik at the 35+ goals for the season club.

"Thank You" Rangers for a GREAT RUN. You went a lot further then anyone expected. No matter how far a team goes, or what is expected of it, a good team is never satisfied with ALMOST. With the heart you showed this year, we know you will be back with a vengeance. GOOD LUCK and keep up the good work.

Im so proud of this team and the guts they played with this year blocking shots like they did. I know this team will only get better next season. What an amazing group! Torts is the best coach because he showed these kids how to bring out the toughness within and I love how he handles the media! He tells it how it is. Better coach than mike keenan or any of those other mild mannered coaches they had in the past without a pulse. I see nothing wrong with torts. LGR!!!!

Just keep crying and making excuses! Referees hate us, Bettiman screws us, every team plays dirty. Ranger fans are the biggest babies and make excuses for everything. Dear Scarbone, Unless you are referring to the Staples Center in Los Angeles, that is the only parking lot that will see a team rally and having been in LA on a few occasions, they have some NYC streets to hold a real celebration. Be thankful that the Rangers took their foot off the pedal as the Eastern Conference Finals had an excellent chance to be 3-0 NY ..Devils more lucky than good explains why the fan base is what it is: part timers in passion and bandwagoneers when they win.

Dear Scarbone...please do not drink so much before posting a comment on this site. These have to be the stupidest remarks that I heard all season! First, Brodeur's game did not figure in this playoff round..if it had (such as in Game 5 in BLOWING a 3 goal lead on Gaborik's goal), the Rangers might have set a playoff series scoring record. Give MB a break..most 40 year olds can't skate much less play goalie in the NHL. Lundqvist is the goalie of the future and his credentials prove it...Might come to realize that the Devils won from the effort on the ice and not what came from Deboar off the bench...it is truth in life, "if you surround yourself with good people, it makes you look better".....if you are planning on watching the Cup Finals, see how the Kings handle this...they are fast and shoot (two enemies for an over age goaltender)

But the one thing that that annoys me the most and I'm sure our beloved NYR's know it .. is the fact that we couldn't get to give them a standing ovation to their end of game salute and show our deepest appreciation for all the hard work. Dear the 2011/12 New York Rangers .. WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU. Congratulations on a job well done.

I think I figured out why I'm so upset at the way this season ended. Obviously the way it ended, and the hope that we all had for what is to come, makes this difficult. But I feel like I knew this team, maybe it was the 24/7 special on HBO or how accessible all of the players are to the media and to us fans, I don't know, but I am feeling this loss so much more agonizingly than ever before. I liked this team. No, scratch that, I LOVE this team, I love their grit, their passion, their never say die attitude. I love the hope for what the next season brings, I just wish next season wasn't already something we're looking forward to. It was a great season, it was a great ride, it just stinks that it's over. Bring on October!

Congrats on a great season! This RANGERS team acheived much more than any of the "experts" expected. True, the playoff ended in crushing disappointment. But, the boys battled hard and showed that they will be contenders for years to come. No need for major changes or overhauls. A few minor tweaks, paired with the lessons learned this season and this team will be back stronger and better than ever!
