Controlling Ovechkin

One of the keys to beating the Washington Capitals is always trying to contain Alex Ovechkin. So how important was it that the Rangers limited Ovi to just one shot on goal in 21 minutes of ice-time in Saturday's Game One at The Garden?

Ovechkin has been getting less ice time because he has been playing like an ICE GIRL.... just not his old self... must be distracted by our good looking fans behind the penalty box.

Ovi can't score if he does not have the puck... and if the puck is in the Caps zone all night, which it will be, he will be one frustrated Ruski!

Shouldn't be a problem at home because you know Girardi and McD are going to be out there shutting him down every shift, but it will be interesting to see what happens on the road when the caps can get him on the ice against the rangers 2nd and 3rd d pairs. I agree that he's not the only threat the caps possess and he's had a season undeserving of the "Alexander the Great" name, but he's still one of those explosive players that can change a game if he's even given a lane to the net once.

Just read an article on Shanahan in the International Herald Tribune.... Shanahan's rationale for not suspending Chris Neil for his hit on Boyle was that suspendable hits are usually for offenses where a victim players head is principle point of contact and targeted recklessly. Seems that is exactly what happened to Boyle, as I recall. A concussion from a vicious blindside RECKLESS hit by Chris Neil. Shanahan is incompetent. Pure and simple. A great hockey player, and probably a decent guy, but he is just a very poor choice to be disciplinarian for the NHL. Time for him to be fired.

I see 4-1 victory Monday night, if not more... I think if we get going at least 4 goals... their goalie is too nervous and he looks like is is overdue for a major choke.

Caps goalie looked horrible in game one. Let in a couple of soft goals. Looked like a nervous SIEVE.

We have just too much talent. Boyle and Kreider are two huge surprises and are devastating heat seeking missles to add to our arsenal. I am sure if I was the Caps I'd be sh*tting in my pants.

Its not all about just containing ovie! This is what their problem has been worrying about one player and the others score. They need to kmow that there is more than one offensive problem on this team. We need D and some goals I believe we can pull this out in 6 or 7 I have faith LETS GO RANGERS

The Caps have several offensive threats which must be contained. However, limiting the number of shots(whether it be from Ovie or some other Cap) is not nearly as important as limiting the quality of those shots, and that's what the Rangers defensive structure is all about. They know that it takes a high quality shot, along with a bit of luck, to beat Hank.

In order to contain the Ovie, we must BE the ovie! :)

shutting down Ovechkin is important, but he isn't the entire capitals team. If anything, they want the Rangers to focus on him so their other offensive weapons can hit us. Give ovie a bit more attention than the others, but treat every one as a threat and the result of game two will be similar to game one.

Caps do not mind having Ovi shut down by our shut down pair and sending Semin out against our 2nd line D. Our D needs to stay strong like they have all year against this team.

Bottom Line O.V is gonna come with his A game in this series. Many think if we we shut him down we can control the game and win. He's just one man. If we shut everyone else down, the caps have to rely on him to step it up which I don't think he can.

You can never count Ovechkin out. Period. That being said i'd be worried about Semin. The guy has shown a new level to his game. This is the guy who had some of the, if not the best chances last game.

I feel we are on a roll... the Caps are flat against us. We have just too much explosive speed.... I think the second period in game six vs. Ottawa said it all... we can explode from all spots.

Ovechkin is a dangerous player, but honestly, I think the Caps have to adjust to us much more than we have to adjust to them. With Haglin, Gabby and now Kreider, the Caps are totally outgunned... yes they are dangerous, but frankly we are more dangerous.

It is super you can see when Ovie is being check he will rush shots and most of the time frfom far out. We just need to not let him camp out to either side of Hank that were he is deadly.

Love the culture Torts has established here. Jack Adams should be his. Indeed, thanks to Slats for kid Kreider. Nash ain't worth givin up Kreids. Also, a tremendous amount of thanks to our scout/s for seeing the right stuff in all of these kids!

this Caps team has gelled in the post-season so, the Rangers have to stop a team effort, not individuals.

Who comes up with these poll questions? Rangers-Sens went 7. You can't go to 8,so not harder.

Of course you can. Three full overtime periods is an 8th game. That's if you think harder means just longer. Everyone who's ever won the Cup says the same thing. Each series gets harder, and the fourth win, in each series, is the toughest to get.

Have to shut him down but can't forget about their other players. Ovechkin isn't the team...

Contain, don't obsess. If I'm not mistaken, he drew two Rangers to him, opening up the ice, just before Laich's saucer pass to Chimera.
