MATT: I thought Dan Girardi played a really strong game Saturday night, picking up an assist on Ryan McDonagh's goal, was a plus-1 in nearly 26 minutes of ice time. The Rangers' defensemen want to contribute offensively, and the best way to do that is fire shots on net, and Girardi did that last night, as he registered two shots and sent another four on net, including the one McDonagh deflected home. Girardi, in my opinion, has had the toughest adjustment to Alain Vigneault's system, but recently he's looking more comfortable, and that's a positive for not only Girardi but the entire team, as he's still arguably the team's best shutdown blueliner.
JIM: I agree, Dan Girardi had a real strong showing last night, and I thought he and Ryan McDonagh really anchored the Rangers outstanding defensive effort. However I am going with Derek Dorsett as my Unsung Hero from Saturday night. I loved the way he stepped in and challenged Kevin Klein after the Preds defenseman crushed Brian Boyle into the back boards with the game still scoreless in the second period. He also provided plenty of jump alongside Boyle and Dominic Moore, finishing with three shots on goal while being credited with a pair of hits in nearly 13 minutes of very effective ice time.
