The two New York rivals met for the first time on Feb. 7 at Madison Square Garden, when a rookie named J.T. Miller stole the show in just his second career NHL game. The then 19-year-old notched two goals while Marian Gaborik and Ryan McDonagh each added goals to go along with Henrik Lundqvist’s 27 saves in the 4-1 win.

The teams met again on St. Valentine’s Day at MSG, this time with the Islanders leaving Manhattan with a victory in the shootout. The Rangers held a 2-0 lead behind goals from Dan Girardi and Gaborik, but a three-goal second period for the Islanders even the score at 3-3 before Frans Nielesen and John Tavares beat Martin Biron in the shootout for the 4-3 win.

The final two games of the season series at Nassau Coliseum were equally as close, starting on March 7. With the Islanders holding onto a 1-0 lead late in the third period, Rick Nash beat Evgeni Nabokov with about five minutes remaining, and Gaborik won the game on the power play in overtime to give the Blueshirts their fourth consecutive win.

Overtime was once again needed in the season series finale on April 13. With no scoring throughout regulation, the Rangers captured the win on a gorgeous Dan Girardi wrist shot from just inside the faceoff circle beat Nabokov for the 1-0 win.

The Rangers are 119-99-19-7 all-time against the New York Islanders.
