Last Season’s Matchups
The Rangers struggled against the Penguins last season, going 1-3-1 against their division rival during the truncated campaign.
The Penguins spoiled New York’s home opener in a 6-3 win on Jan. 20, which featured both Rick Nash and Taylor Pyatt scoring their first goals with the Blueshirts.
Just 11 days later, the Penguins blanked the Rangers, 3-0, at Madison Square Garden.
In their first trip to Pittsburgh on March 16, the Rangers were once again stymied by the Penguins in another 3-0 loss.
The next meeting on April 3 is a game few Rangers fans will soon forget. After the team made two trades leading up to that day’s trade deadline, several of the newly acquired players — including Derick Brassard and John Moore — arrived just minutes before the drop of the puck and immediately made an impact. Brassard score a goal and added three assists while Moore added a goal in the team’s 6-1 win.
Two days later, the two clubs met for the fifth and final time in Pittsburgh, and the results were much different. While the previous game featured an offensive explosion, the Rangers found themselves in a tight-scoring contest, which they ultimately lost, 2-1, in a shootout. Henrik Lundqvist was brilliant in the loss, making 34 saves.
All-time, the Rangers are 118-103-23-9 against the Penguins in the regular season.
