Saturday afternoon the Rangers recalled veteran center Kris Newbury from the team's minor league affilate Connecticut Whale. The move comes the same day another veteran center, Jeff Halpern ,was claimed on waivers by the Montreal Canadiens and with rookie forward J.T. Miller sitting out practice with a sore left wrist.
The 31 year-old Newbury leads the Whale in scoring with 58 points in 62 games this season. His 18 goals are tied for the team lead with Brandon Segal, while his six power plays goals rank second on the team. His 38 assists are ten more than any other player on the Whale.
A year ago Newbury led the Whale with 25 goals and 64 points, setting career-highs in both categories.
This season Newbury has also appeared in one game with the Rangers. In that game on January 24th against the Flyers, Newbury racked up seven penalty minutes with five minutes of ice time. Newbury has appeared in 19 game sover the past three seasons with the Rangers, totaling 66 penalty minutes and one assist in that span.
