Rangers: In 85 previous home openers at Madison Square Garden, the Rangers have posted a 36-33-16 record, including a 4-2 loss to the Maple Leafs last season. That game against Toronto on October 27, 2011 marked the only time in the past eight home openers where the Rangers did not earn at least one point in the standings. Today's contest equals the latest date the Rangers have ever played their home opener, matching the January 20, 1995 first home game against the Buffalo Sabres.

Penguins: Pittsburgh has won seven of the last nine games it has played at Madison Square Garden, dating back to November 30, 2009. A solid road club, the Penguins already snagged two points on the road with a 3-1 victory in Philadelphia on Saturday. Last season the Penguins had the sixth-best road record in the NHL, winning 22 games and earning 48 points.
