Wednesday night the Rangers announced that the club had traded for hulking winger Brandon Mashinter, acquiring him from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for minor league forward Tommy Grant and a conditional 2014 draft pick.
The 24 year-old Mashinter, who had two goals and five points playing in 30 games with Worcester of the AHL this saeson, has appeared in 13 National Hockey League games with the Sharks in his career, totaling 17 penalty minutes in that span.
Mashinter will bring added size and toughness to the Rangers organization; and he has shown a scoring touch in the past, as well.
As an undrafted free agent rookie in 2009-10 the 6-foot-4, 235 pound Mashinter scored a career-high 22 goals and produced a career-best 37 points and 117 penalty minutes with Worcester. He split the following season between the AHL and NHL, racking three fighting majors with the Sharks in 13 games at the NHL level.
Grant, 26, was playing in his second full season with the Connecticut Whale of the AHL, and had scored nine goals and totaled 17 points in 34 games after netting 11 goals and producing 23 points a year ago.
