Cally Honored Before Game

Rangers captain Ryan Callahan became only the second Blueshirts player to win the team's Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award three times during his career on Friday night in a special pregame ceremony featuring Police Officer Steven McDonald, his wife, Patti, and son Conor, a current NYPD officer.

Callahan was honored prior to the Blueshirts' home game against the Montreal Canadiens. Rangers legend Mark Messier joined the McDonalds in the ceremony.

Callahan, who won the award in the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons, was selected in by a vote of thousands of Rangers fans to receive the 24th annual award, which dates back to the 1987-88 season. The award recognizes the Rangers player who performs “above and beyond the call of duty” and is named after Steven McDonald, who was shot and injured in the line of duty.

In a true Rangers tradition, McDonald presented the award with inspirational words for the entire team.

"Thank God it's Friday," said McDonald. "I want to say first what an honor it is to be on the ice with the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers. Coach Tortorella and captain Callahan, you have to know how much we have appreciated your team's hard work, tenacity and fire. You inspire us all. All we ask is that you play like champions and we'll see you in June."

Following his father's speech, Conor McDonald announced Callahan as the winner, and Messier represented the Tsmhrtd organization in presentinh the Steven McDonald Foundation with a check for $25,000.

In his first season as team captain, the 27-year-old Callahan entered Thursday nights' home game against Montreal in the midst of a career year with 28 goals and 25 assists for 53 points, along with 55 penalty minutes in 71 games.

Although the award has been presented 24 times, only 15 players have won it. Graves leads the way with five honors, followed by Callahan with three, and Jan Erixon, mark Messier, Sandy McCarthy, and Jed Ortmeyer with two apiece.

Three other members of the current Rangers team -- Henrik Lundqvist, Brandon Dubinsky, and Brandon Prust -- are also former Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award winners.
