If Rangers winger Carl Hagelin had any set plans for the five-day NHL All Star break he had better cancel them immediately. That's because on Wednesday Hagelin was selected to take part in All Star weekend as part of the rookie All Stars, replacing New Jersey's injured Adam Henrique.
Hagelin, 23, joins Rangers teammates Henrik Lundqvist, Marian Gaborik, and Dan Girardi in Ottawa for the league's mid-season festivities. And the team's head coach John Tortorella will also represent the Rangers organization by coaching the Team Alfredsson entry this weekend.
The swift-skating Hagelin will take part in Saturday's Superskills Competition for one of the teams---either Team Alfredsson, for whom Lundqvist has been named assistant captain, or Team Chara. One can almost guarantee that Hagelin will take part in the Fastest Skater Competition on Saturday.
Hagelin, who began the year with the Rangers AHL affiliate in Connecticut, has appeared in 29 NHL games and scored 8 goals, notched 8 assists, and recorded 16 points to go along with a very impressive +13 plus/minus rating. Though he has played far fewer games than most league rookies, Hagelin is the 11th leading scorer amongst all first-year players in the National Hockey League, while his plus/minus mark is tied for best among rookies along with Philadelphia's Sean Couturier.
