The Rangers entered Sunday's contest against the Canadiens at the Bell Centre winless in their last five visits to Montreal, including a 4-0 shutout loss this past November 19th. And nothing changed for the Rangers on Sunday as they surrendered three second-period goals en-route to a 4-1 loss.
The Blueshirts are now 0-5-1 in Montreal dating back to their last win at the Bell Centre on March 17, 2009.
Montreal's forward line combination of Erik Cole-David Desharnais-Max Pacorietty combined for three goals and nine points on Sunday, including a pair when Montreal turned a 1-1 game decidedly in their favor with a dominant middle stanza. Pacorietty scored a pair of goals and assisted on Desharnais' goal late in the second, while Desharnais also had two assists and Cole contributed three assists.
After falling behind 2:39 into the game on Pacorietty's first goal of the night, the Rangers pulled even when John Mitchell tapped a rebound past Montreal goalie Peter Budaj at 12:49 of the first period. The goal was Mitchell's third of the season. Marian Gaborik earned his 300th career assist on the play, while Derek Stepan also picked up a helper.
Often defenseless as his teammates scrambled against the Canadiens, Henrik Lundqvist lost his second straight start in goal for the Rangers. Lundqvist had won seven consecutive starts until falling to the Senators 3-0 Thursday night at The Garden. He finished with 25 saves on Sunday night.
A grueling stretch of four-games-in-six-nights behind them, the Rangers will be off on Monday before starting a three-games-in-five-nights stretch Tuesday with a tilt at The Garden against the Nashville Predators.
