Rangers-Flyers Preview

First place in the Atlantic Division---and quite possibly the entire Eastern Conference---is on the line tonight at The Garden when the Rangers (20-8-4, 44 pts) host the Flyers (21-8-4, 46 pts) in the final game before the Christmas holiday break. With a win in regulation the Rangers---who have won three in a row following last night's 4-2 home-ice victory over the Islanders---would pull into a tie with the Flyers for the top spot in the Atlantic Division, and should Boston lose either in regulation or in overtime, the Rangers would also be tied for first place in Eastern Conference at the break. Adding to the crazed atmosphere at The Garden will be the HBO cameras filming both teams for the 24/7 series, and the spectre of the Winter Classic being played between these same two teams in less than two weeks. The Rangers won the only meeting between these rivals so far this season, a 2-0 shutout on November 26th in which Henrik Lundqvist made 29 saves. Lundqvist now has four lifetime shutouts against Philly, the fourth most he has earned against any one team during his career. Marian Gaborik enters play with five goals over his last three games, and he is tied with three other for the NHL's goal-scoring lead with 20. The Flyers attack is led by Claude Giroux, who leads the league in scoring with 43 points. He is back in the lineup following a short concussion-related absence.
