Rangers-Islanders Preview

Thursday night at The Garden the Rangers (19-8-4, 42 pts) square off with the Islanders (11-14-6, 28 pts) for the third time this season, and for the first time on home ice. It also marks the first of two meetings between these New York-New York rivals at The Garden in a five-day stretch. The Blueshirts, who beat the Devils 4-1 in Newark on Tuesday and who face-off with the Flyers at MSG Friday night, have won two in a row and are in the midst of an intense three-games-in-four-nights stretch against Atlantic Division opponents before the Christmas holiday break. The Blueshirts have split their first two games against the Islanders so far this season, and are 113-99-19-5 all-time against their Long Island rivals. Marian Gaborik enters play having scored four goals and recorded five points in the previous two games, while linemate Derek Stepan is coming off a three-assist outing in New Jersey. The Islanders have won two games in a row, a pair of one-goal victories over Winnipeg and Minnesota. They have won three straight only one time this season, back in mid-October.
