The Rangers needed two points — or a Winnipeg Jets regulation loss — in their final two games to secure a playoff berth. They wanted to get it done sooner rather than later, and did just that Thursday with a 4-3 overtime win over the Carolina Hurricanes.
The Rangers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Derek Stepan and Derick Brassard. The Hurricanes, though, scored three unanswered and led 3-2 late in the third period before Brad Richards knotted the game on the power play. The game headed to overtime where Ryan Callahan's wrist shot beat Dan Ellis to end the game and send the Rangers to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
