Rangers-Blues Preview

Two of the top defensive teams in the National Hockey League will meet Thursday night at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis when the Rangers (17-7-4, 38 pts) face off with the Blues (17-9-3, 37 pts). The Rangers own a team goals against average of just 2.07 per game. There are only two other teams in the league with a lower GAA, and of them is St. Louis, which is second-best in the NHL at 2.03 (Boston leads the league at 2.00). Henrik Lundqvist has put forth a solid season, so far, with a miniscule 2.03 goals against average and stellar .933 save percentage, while back up Martin Biron has been just as good, fashioning a 1.79 goals against and .937 save percentage while winning five of his six starts. Interestingly, Lundqvist has never beaten the Blues in his career---though he has only faced them twice before. The only other two teams Lundqvist does not have a win against in his career are the Red Wings and, of course, the Rangers. At the other end of the ice, St. Louis' Brian Elliott is turning in a career year, posting a 12-2-0 record in 15 appearances, while leading the NHL with both a 1.45 goals against average and a .947 save percentage. The Rangers are coming off a 1-0 loss to Dallas on Tuesday, and are 2-2-1 in their previous five games; while the Blues have won three straight, including a 1-0 victory Saturday over the Sharks in their most recent game.
