Carl Hagelin recorded the first two-goal game of his young NHL career as the Rangers won for the 2,500th time in franchise history, beating the Buffalo Sabres 4-1 Saturday night at First Niagara Center. Hagelin opened the scoring with a blistering shorthaded goal from left wing 11:34 into the second period, and then put the Rangers ahead 3-1 3:02 into the third with another left-wing slap shot that eluded Sabres goalie Jhonas Enroth. Hagelin now has three goals in his first eight NHL games. Ryan Callahan also scored a shorthanded goal---off a modified spin-o-rama move with 1:09 to play in the middle stanza---to give the Rangers three shorthanded goals scored in the past two games. The last time the Blueshirts scored two shorties in one game was on January 20, 2009, with Blair Betts and Fredrik Sjostrom both tallying a man down. Marian Gaborik added a power play goal, his team-high 14th this season, late in the third period. Martin Biron earned his fifth win of the season in goal, finishing with 30 saves, while also earning an assist on Hagelin's second goal. Michael Del Zotto added a pair of assists.
