The earlier editions have muted or washed out colors on a thinner paper that allows birds from the other side to bleed through. This is a well-designed, practical, pocket-sited field guide, written and illustrated by two of the best field ornithologists in Argentina. I also liked that each species was depicted by both photo and drawing. The book is bi-lingual in Spanish and English. Completely up to date with almost 1000 species, it features professional grade photographs, hand made detailed illustrations, range maps for each species and over 700 recorded songs. And more features to come. This book is available in both Spanish and English. I ordered the book based on the other reviews, regrettably.
Substantively, this book could be improved with larger maps and pages comparing similar species. The main physical features, behaviour and habitat are clearly described. This expanded updated edition is the indispensable tool needed to identify wild birds of southern South America. New, used, or out-of-print; Buteo Books is the place to locate that hard-to-find title. It is indispensable for identifying all the birds of Argentina and Uruguay, including many from Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia and Chile. You are reduced to searching by name.
The drawings are quite poor, but having the photos even if they are also of sometimes low quality is a real help--I wish more guides would do that. It is sorted alphabetically by family name vs. The size and shape of the guide is such that it will fit into an oversized pocket. When new features are available we will highlight them in the release. It is also in both Spanish and English, which is good if you have a local guide who is not bilingual.
